RWTH AACHEN UNIVERSITY

RWTH Aachen University is one of Europe’s leading educational and research institutions, with core competencies in the natural and engineering sciences. By employing interdisciplinary methods and approaches, its students and staff form an innovative scientific community dedicated to providing responsible solutions to the pressing problems of our society.

German Research School for Simulation Sciences

The German Research School for Simulation Sciences is a joint organization of RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich which aims to advance cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and education in the innovative field of simulation sciences.

Full Professor (W3) in Computational Materials Science

Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences

We are seeking qualified applicants for teaching and research in the area of Computational Materials Science. The starting date is Apr. 1, 2009. The position is part of the German Research School for Simulation Sciences (GRS) – a research institute established and operated jointly by RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich. GRS aims to promote simulation sciences and the use of high-performance computing to address critical issues in health, environment, energy, mobility and information technology research. The GRS hosts a new English-language Master program and a doctoral program in simulation sciences. The position will be based at the GRS facility on the Jülich campus and is limited initially to 5 years.

The candidate should have a strong background in the development and application of state-of-the-art computational methods, models and algorithms that enable the use of highly-scalable supercomputers to successfully address challenges in materials science. Special experience for example in the application of quantum-mechanical ab-initio molecular dynamics methods to calculate macroscopic materials properties from microscopic theory would be desirable. A close cooperation with one of the existing research activities of the faculty as well as participation in the Master course Simulation Sciences is expected.

A doctoral degree in engineering, natural sciences or computer science is required; additionally, Habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification), an exemplary record of research achievement as an assistant/an associate/a junior professor or university researcher and/or an outstanding career outside academia are highly desirable. Ability in and commitment to teaching are essential. German is not necessary to begin with but will be expected as a teaching language within the first 5 years.

Please send a cover letter stating research aims and a CV to: An den Dekan der Fakultät für Mathematik und Naturwissenschaften der RWTH Aachen, Prof. Dr. U. Simon, Templergraben 55, D-52062 Aachen, Germany. The deadline for applications is Jan. 30, 2009.
