The Max Planck Society represented by the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen and the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg perform basic marine research, with common interests in chemical and microbiological processes.

The new Max Planck research group in Marine Geochemistry at the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg (Institute for Chemistry and Biology of Marine Systems, ICBM) invites applications for a

Research Scientist Position in Marine Biogeochemistry

The appointment will be for two years, with a possible extension up to five years.

The research scientist hired for this position will work mainly on the biogeochemistry of marine dissolved organic matter (DOM). Focus will be the molecular characterization of DOM with state-of-the-art analytical techniques, including high-resolution mass spectrometry via the Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance technique (FT-ICR-MS). The molecular information will be used to resolve questions regarding the global organic carbon cycle, with emphasis on organic matter cycling in the oceanic water column.

The duties of the research scientist also include advice of graduate students and laboratory administration. The research will involve occasional participation on international research cruises.

Applicants should hold a PhD in chemistry, environmental sciences, or related fields. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in analytical chemistry and with a proven publication record. The salary is according to the German system for public employees (E 13 TVöD ).
